Mahbub Uddin Khokon said: “Khaleda Zia has been admitted to CCU for two days. In the afternoon, her younger brother again appealed to the Home Minister for Khaleda Zia to be taken abroad for advanced treatment.”

He said that as the BNP chairperson’s physical condition was in a bad state now, there was an urgent need for advanced treatment for her.

According to sources, the application sought the government’s cooperation to send Khaleda abroad either by granting bail through the court or giving permission.

Meanwhile, the Home Minister’s Private Secretary Dewan Mahbubur Rahman told reporters that Shamim Iskander submitted the application on Thursday. The ministry then forwarded the application to the Law Ministry seeking its legal opinion on the matter.

AZM Zahid Hossain, Khaleda’s personal physician, said it is for the fifth time the BNP chief’s family sought the government’s permission to take her abroad.

“She is undergoing treatment at the hospital as per the advice of doctors, but she needs advanced treatment. That is why it is important to take her abroad at this moment,” he added.

Before this, Khaleda’s family applied to the government in August this year to take her abroad for better treatment, but the government turned it down saying there was no scope for a convict to avail such a scope.

The 76-year-old former prime minister was readmitted to the hospital on Sunday, nearly a week after she was discharged from the same health facility as per the advice of the medical board formed earlier for her treatment.

On October 12, Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital for the second time with fever and some other health complications.

She got back home on November 7 from the hospital after treatment for 26 days.

On October 25, the BNP chief underwent a surgery and biopsy test at Evercare Hospital as she had a small lump in a part of her body.

Later, her biopsy report was sent to the US and the UK for review. No sign of cancer was detected.

She has long been suffering from arthritis, diabetes, and dental, and eye problems.
