Jhumon Das granted 1 year bail on condition

Jhumon Das has been granted one year bail by the High Court in a case under the Digital Security Act. However, Jhumon Das will not be able to go abroad in this one year. He can’t even go outside of Sunamganj without the permission of the court.

A High Court bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajal passed the order on Thursday (September 23rd). Besides, the court has issued a rule.

Petitioner’s lawyer ZI Khan Panna said,there is no legal bar for Jhumon to get released from Sunamganj jail following the HC order of bail.

Jhumon Das is currently in jail after being arrested in a case filed under the Digital Security Act at Shalla Police Station in Sunamganj for posting offensive posts on Facebook about the leader of Hefazat-e-Islam, Mamunul Haque.

Lawyers Tabarak Hossain, Subrata Chowdhury, Nahid Sultana Juthi and Ashraf Ali also appeared for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Yahiya Dulal and Assistant Attorney General Md Mizanur Rahman represented the state.

Appearing for the petitioner, senior lawyer ZI Khan Panna told the HC that Jhuman Das is a patriot not a traitor, as he spoke out against the communal force.

The case should have been filed against those communal forces under DSA, he argued.

On March 22, the police filed a case under the Digital Security Act at Shalla Police Station. Jhumon was arrested on March 23 in this case. He was remanded in custody for two days on March 30 for questioning in the case.

After the bail hearing of Jhumon Das on September 21, today was set for the order. Jhumun Das applied for bail in the High Court after his bail application was rejected on several occasions in the case.
