Modhumoti Bridge Opening : A joyous day for south-western region’s people

People from all walks of life from almost 10 districts were seen rushing to the opening ceremony of
the country’s first ever six-lane Modhumoti Bridge in Narail.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today inaugurated the country’s first ever six-lane Modhumoti Bridge in Narail along with the third Shitalakhya Bridge in Narayanganj through a videoconferencing from her office, Report BSS

After opening the bridge, people expressed their satisfaction with a joyous and happy look in their face and extended gratitude to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for making their dream come true.

From now on, the people of the south-western region will enjoy faster road communication as the bridge will reduce over 100-kilometer distance from Kalnaghat to capital Dhaka.

From the very early in the morning, people of all ages from Narail, Gopalganj, Khulna, Magura and other  districts, connected by the bridge, were seen coming in groups wearing colourful dresses to the bridge premises with utmost excitement and happiness.

More than one thousand people were seen crossing two bridges on foot and taking pictures amid enthusiasm and festivity.

“I am so excited and happy to think that I am crossing the river in ten minutes,” said Khan Nafiur Rahman, a diploma student, who came to visit the bridge with his family members.

“Before that, I had to wait at least one hour to cross the river from any side resulting in huge time loss and sufferings,” he said, adding “Particularly the sick and elderly people have been suffering the most for years”.

The bridge will boost economy of the region and ease road communication massively as well as contribute to country’s overall economy, said Freedom Fighter M Wahiduzzaman Dablu, Joint Director, Bangladesh Bank, Khulna.

The economic activities of Benapole Land Port, Mongla Sea Port and Noapara River Port will increase manifold, he said, adding that the residents of the region can come back to their homes after finishing their jobs in Dhaka within a day.

The longstanding sufferings of the people of this area via Kalna Ferry Ghat came to an end through the opening of the bridge.

“I cannot believe that from now on, it will take only ten minutes to cross the river,” said Shahidul.

The 690-meter long Modhumoti Bridge, which is locally called Kalna Bridge, is built on the river Modhumoti at a cost of Taka 960 crore with the funding of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

It connects Narail, Gopalganj, Khulna, Magura, Satkhira, Chuadanga, Jashore, and Jhenidah districts.

People of at least 10 southwestern districts will be able to travel to different areas in less time. It will also reduce travel time from the country’s largest land port Benapole and Jashore to Dhaka, as the distance will only be 130km.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the Modhumoti Bridge on January 24 in 2015 in between Kashiani upazila under Gopalganj district and Lohagara upazila under Narail district.

The people of the region now use the Dhaka-Jashore-Benapole Highway via Paturia-Daulatdia ferry ghat meaning they travel 100 kilometers more to reach Dhaka from Jashore.

According to project officials, the bridge will be a part of Asian Highway which will connect the capital with the country’s south-western zone including country’s biggest Benapole Land Port.

The 27.1 meter wide bridge would have six lanes including four high speed lanes and two service lanes with a 4.30 kilometer approach road.
