Sheikh Hasina’s imprisonment day observed

DHAKA, July 16, 2022 (NNB/BSS) – The imprisonment day of Awami League (AL) President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was observed today in the capital and elsewhere across the country amid holding different programmes and maintaining the health guidelines and social distancing.

On the occasion, Bangladesh Awami League (AL), its associate bodies and likeminded socio-cultural organisations arranged the day with various programmers, including special doa, Milad Mahfil, discussions, according to reports reached here this evening.

Dhaka City North and South units of ruling Awami League organized a discussion at the Bangabandhu Avenue’s Awami League Central Office on the occasion.

The AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister, Obaidul Quader, MP, spoke it as the chief guest with Dhaka South City unit of AL president Abu Ahmed Mannafi was in the chair.

Party presidium members Begum Matia Chowdhury and Kamrul Islam, joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Dr Dipu Moni and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Organizing Secretary Mirza Azam, Dhaka North City unit of AL President Sheikh Bazlur Rahman and Dhaka South City AL general secretary, among others, also spoke there.

Marking Sheikh Hasina’s Imprisonment Day, the Bangladesh Awami Swechasebak League organized a discussion at the Dhanmondi Kalabagan Sports Complex (Krirachakra) Auditorium; where doa was offered wishing her (Sheikh Hasina’s) sound health and long life.

Awami League Joint General Secretary Agriculturist AFM Bahauddin Nashim was present as the chief guest on the occasion.

AL organizing secretary Afzal Hussain, acting president of the organization Gazi Mezbaul Hossain Sacchu and organisation’s General Secretary Afzalur Rahman Babu also spoke there.

Meanwhile, Awami Juba League (JL) organized milad and doa mahfil at Bangabandhu Avenue for long life and sound health of premier Sheikh Hasina.

JL general secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil along with central and city JL leaders were present on the occasion.

Sheikh Hasina was arrested from her Sudha Sadan residence from city’s Dhanmondi area early morning on July 16, 2007 during the military-backed caretaker government, which took over the office in the political changeover of 1/11 in 2007.

Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies observe the day as the “Imprisonment Day of Sheikh Hasina”. They have taken various programmes, including discussions, milad and doa mahfils, for marking the day.

AL President Sheikh Hasina was released on June 11 in 2008 from the special sub-jail set up on the Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) Building premises after remaining captive there for nearly 11 months.

As she fell sick during her confinement, a strong protest or demand was raised then from different quarters, including the Awami League and its associate bodies to send her abroad for better medical treatment after releasing her from the jail.

Conceding to the people’s spontaneous and repeated demands and pressure from different quarters, the caretaker government was compelled to release Sheikh Hasina from the jail.

The day after his release, she had to fly to the United States for better treatment. Sheikh Hasina returned home on November 6, 2008 after treatment. Subsequently she was granted permanent bail.

After winning the national election on December 29, 2008, a grand alliance government led by the Bangladesh Awami League was formed on January 6, 2009.

Sheikh Hasina became the Prime Minister for the second time.
