Evaly CEO Rassel and Chairman Shamima arrested

Evaluated e-commerce company Evaly CEO Rassel and his wife, Shamima Nasrin, the company’s chairman, have been arrested.

After an hour-long raid on Rassel’s home on Sir Syed Road in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur on Thursday afternoon, they were taken in a white car to the RAB headquarters at 5.20pm.

Khairul Islam, head of the RAB’s intelligence branch, said they had been taken to the RAB headquarters. The case that has been filed will show their arrest.

Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the RAB’s law and media branch, told the media that the raid was launched at Rassel’s flat at Niloy Comprehensive Holding (House No. 5/5A) on Sir Syed Road in Mohammadpur around 4pm on Thursday. However, he did not immediately say what the allegations were about the operation.

Earlier on Wednesday night, a customer named Arif Baker filed a case against Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin, the chairman of the company, alleging fraud and embezzlement. Gulshan police inspector (investigation) Aminul Islam confirmed the matter.

According to the case statement, customer Arif Baker and his friends paid Tk 3,10,597 through online banking and a bank card at different times from May 29 to June 16. The company promised a full refund if the product failed to deliver within 7 to 45 days. Arif failed to get the product by contacting the customer service branch (custom care center) of Evaly on September 5. Arif Baker, said in his complaint that he had ordered goods worth Tk 3 lakh 10 thousand from Evaly. But for a long time no product was delivered to him. Later, on September 9, Arif went to the office of Evaly at 14 Dhanmondi Road with two friends. But Evaly CEO Rassel did not want to meet them. At one point in the office, Rassel refused to pay them and threatened to kill them. Customer Arif  Baker alleged that Evaly was hesitant to return the money every time he was contacted.

Rassel, who served as chief executive officer (CEO) at Evaly, also holds the position of managing director (MD) of the company.

The plaintiff, in the complaint, stated Evaly cheated innumerable numbers of customers like him in the name of selling products. Evaly has reportedly misappropriated Tk 7-8 billion (700-800 crore).

Meanwhile, after the meeting of the inter-ministerial committee held at the Secretariat, the Director General of the WTO cell of the Ministry of Commerce. Hafizur Rahman said, last Tuesday, an inter-ministerial committee headed by the Commerce Ministry decided to recommend the Home Ministry to take action against Evaly.
