Supreme Court stays bail of accused Monir in journalist Nadim murder case

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday stayed for eight weeks a High Court order that granted bail to Moniruzzaman Monir, an accused in the murder case of Jamalpur journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim.

Chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order following a petition filed by the state seeking stay on the HC order of bail.

Assistant Attorney General Md Saiful Alam said following the apex court’s chamber judge’s order Monir cannot be released from jail. A leave to appeal petition will be moved before the SC full bench against the HC bail order.

Nadim, who was the Jamalpur district correspondent of Banglanews24.com and also the Bakshiganj upazila correspondent of Ekattor TV, succumbed to his injuries on June 15, a day after allegedly being attacked by supporters of suspended UP chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu. Nadim’s wife Monira Begum filed the case with Jamalpur’s Bakshiganj Police Station on June 17.

On September 18 and 25, the HC granted bail to Mahmudul, the prime accused, and Monir respectively following separate petitions filed by them seeking bail in the case.

On September 20, the SC chamber judge stayed till November 20 the HC order that granted bail to Mahmudul in the case.
