People are strength of AL, not any foreign force: Hasan Mahmud

Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud today said AL does not believe in staying in power capitalizing on favour of any foreign force as people are the strength of the party.

“People of Bangladesh are the main strength of Awami League. We have good relations with all foreign countries. India is our true friend. Awami League is leading the democratic non-communal forces in this country,” he said.

Hasan added: “So, democratic non-communal world community cannot stay with those who undemocratically appeared from the gun barrel and do communal politics”.

He said these as chief guest while addressing a discussion on the occasion of the 47th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Mourning Day at the city’s Bangabandhu Hall of Chattogram Press club, under the arrangement of Chattogram north district AL.

Chattogram North District AL President and Zila Parishad Chairman MA Salam presided over the function while its vice presidents Abul Kalam Azad, ATM Pearul Islam and Mohiuddin Rashed and its General Secretary Sheikh Mohammad Ataur Rahman, among others, spoke.

Hasan said: “We know the sad story of Karbala. Imam Husain was slaughtered in the desert of Karbala. But women and children were not killed in the Battle of Karbala. They all were released. But women and children were killed on August 15, 1975.”

Ten-year old child Sheikh Russell and two other children and pregnant Begum Arju Moni were killed in the carnage, he added.

A crime against humanity was indeed committed on that day, he said, adding that Ziaur Rahman would remain in the history as a murderer and a serial killer for this.

Hasan said when the news of Bangabandhu assassination reached Zia in the early morning, Zia said, ‘So what, Vice-President is alive.’ But Zia’s duty was to rush to spot to rescue the President but he didn’t do that, he said.

He said Ziaur Rahman was one of the conspirators of August 15 carnage and he also killed many army officers to remove the risk of his staying in power.

“Some were hanged by summary trial, many others without trial. Actually there was no trial, and no answer was given to questions why the hanging would be carried out. Ziaur Rahman used to sign the execution order during his breakfast,” Hasan said.

Terming many people were involved in plotting with the assassination of Bangabandhu, Hasan said Basanti was a mad girl and she was put on a net and thus her picture was printed in newspaper to make people believe that there was famine.

“But the price of a saree was less than the price of a net. One could get a saree for Tk 250 but couldn’t get a net less than Taka 1,000, it was like so at that period,” he said.

About BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed’s comments over AL, Hasan said the strength of Awami League is the country’s people, not any foreign force.

The minister said BNP announced that it would oust the government. “But Awami League’s root is very deep in this soil. If anyone pushes a solid wall, he falls back. The situation of BNP is also the same,” he added.

Hasan said AL called for a nationwide protest on August 17 against bombings in five hundred places across the country during the regime of BNP.

“Our demonstration on the 17th August was only a test,” he said, adding that after witnessing the AL programme, it is seemed that BNP leaders including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir got scared.

“It was just a rehearsal. We will finally go for programme in full swing in next month. Then they will not find any path to flee,” he said.
