Bangladesh pursuing legal recourse to bring back murderer Rashed from US

Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen expressed hope that the United States will return Rashed Chowdhury, the murderer of Bangabandhu, who was sentenced to death. He said, “We are working to complete the legal process in this regard.”

The foreign minister made the remarks at a media briefing on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s overall program at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel on Tuesday.

“It is in the legal process. We’re pursuing it. But the legal process is a time-consuming matter in the US, he said.

“(But) we are hopeful (of bringing back Rashed Chowdhury to Bangladesh). Our belief is that we’ll be able to bring back the person to the country after completing the legal process,” said Dr Momen.

He said that Bangladesh had earlier brought another killer back to the country from the US.

Replying to a question, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohammad Shahriar Alam said, “BNP and its close ally Jamaat are spreading propaganda against the country by hiring lobbyists abroad. He said, “Failing to get public support in the country, they have chosen the way of propaganda abroad with malicious intent.” But their efforts have failed in the past. Failing now and will fail in the future. We have ample evidence to address their demands.

The State Minister for Foreign Affairs further said, “The Government of Bangladesh is mainly approving the laws and policies of the United Nations to take democracy to new heights as well as to improve the overall human rights situation.”

Foreign Secretary Masood bin Momen, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim and Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Nations Rabab Fatima were present at the briefing.
