Court orders to seize property of Tasnim, Sami and 2 others

A court has ordered the seizure of the assets of four people, including Swedish expatriate journalist Tasnim Khalil and Hungarian expatriate Samiul Islam Khan alias Sam alias Zulkarnain, in a case under the Digital Security Act.

Judge Mohammad Ash Sams Joglul Hossain of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal passed the order on Monday. Nazrul Islam, special public prosecutor of the tribunal, confirmed the information to the media.

Two other accused are – Ashiq Imran, and Shapan Wahed.

The court asked officers-in-charge of four police stations to attach the properties after the prosecution appealed to it in this regard.

The OCs of Cantonment of Dhaka, Bishwanath of Sylhet, Chandpur and Chhatkhil of Noakhali have been directed to submit the reports on execution of property attachment by that date.

On May 6 last year, RAB-3 filed the case against 11 people with Ramna Police Station under the DSA on charge of spreading rumours and carrying out anti-government activities.

On September 12, the tribunal accepted charges against seven people in the case.

Three other accused of the case – cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore; Minhaj Mannan Emon, managing director of BLE Securities and shareholder-director of Dhaka Stock Exchange; and — are now on bail in the case.

Another accused writer Mushtaq Ahmed’s name was dropped from the charge sheet as he died at Kashimpur High-Security Jail on February 25.

The accused were accused of spreading rumors and misinformation on social media to tarnish the image of the father of the nation, the great liberation war of Bangladesh, the epidemic coronavirus, and the image of the state and government.

In May last year, RAB filed a case against the 11 persons at Ramna police station. The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police later filed charges against the seven.
