Bangladesh through to Super 12 with 84-run win over PNG

Bangladesh has qualified for the Super-12, leaving behind the first time it got in the T20 World Cup. The team defeated Papua New Guinea PNG by 84 runs in their last match of Group-B (T20 World Cup 2021) at Al Amerat Stadium in Muscat on Thursday.

This is the biggest win in the history of the World Cup in terms of the team’s runs.

Bangladesh scored 181 runs for 7 wickets while playing first. In reply, the team of PNG (Papua New Guinea) could only score 97 runs. Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan took 4 wickets for 9 runs in 4 overs. Apart from this, he also scored 46 runs. The team had lost to Scotland in the first match. PNG lost all their three matches.

PNG’s team, chasing the target, was never in the match. The team lost 5 wickets for 24 runs. None of the top-7 players could touch the double figure. Kiplin Doriga, who landed at number eight, scored an unbeaten 46 to take the team past 90 runs. The team was reduced to 97 runs in 19.3 overs. Apart from Shakib, fast bowlers Mohammad Saifuddin and Taskin Ahmed took 2-2 wickets from Bangladesh. Earlier in 2016, Bangladesh had registered their biggest win by defeating Oman by 54 runs.

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah won the toss and elected to bat. However, the team did not start well. Mohammad Naeem (0) was dismissed in the very first over. After this, Liton Das (29) and Shakib Al Hasan (46) added 50 runs for the second wicket. Former captain Mushfiqur Rahim could only score 5 runs. The team lost 4 wickets for 101 runs.

Captain Mahmudullah took over the team by scoring 50 runs. He faced 28 balls. Hit 3 fours and 3 sixes. Afif Hussain made 21 off 14 balls and Saifuddin scored an unbeaten 19 off 6 balls to take the score beyond 180 runs. The team scored 181 runs for 7 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs.

Shakib was made the Player of the Match.
