Cumilla incident: Four people including Iqbal have been remanded for 7 days

A local  court has granted seven-day remand to four people including Iqbal Hossain in connection with a case filed over the alleged deseceation of the holy Quran in Cumilla.

Cumilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Mithila Jahan Mita passed the order on Saturday (October 23rd) at noon.

The other 3 are Ikram, Faisal and Hafiz. Comilla Additional Superintendent of Police M Tanvir Ahmed confirmed the matter to media.

He said the investigating officer in the case and Sub-Inspector of Police (SI) Mofizul Islam had applied for a 10-day remand. After the hearing, the court granted for 7-days.

ASP Tanvir said: “During preliminary interrogation, Iqbal confessed to placing the Quran on the lap of Hanuman, a central character in the Epic of Ramayana, before stealing the club from the idol’s hand on October 13.”

“According to Iqbal, he hurled the stolen Hanuman club into a nearby pond later that night,” added the police official.

Earlier, police in Cumilla, after analysing CCTV footage, said Iqbal was the man, who placed the Holy Quran inside the mandap that night.

Iqbal was arrested from Cox’s Bazar on Thursday.

On October 13, a 999 call to police reported that a copy of the Quran was found on an idol of a puja venue in Comilla.

Locals said they found a copy of the Quran on the lap of the Hanuman idol, but his weapon, a club, was missing.

Several temples and puja venues in the city came under attack in the afternoon as tension mounted over allegations of sacrilege.

The violence later spread across Bangladesh, leaving seven dead and many Hindu houses and businesses vandalized.
