Search committee gets more than three hundred names: EC

The search committee has received more than 300 names from various political parties, professional organizations and individuals for the post of Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners. Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam made the remarks after the second meeting of the search committee at noon on Saturday (February 12).

He said, “In two meetings today, about three hours of discussions were held with eminent persons. There were 14 prominent people in the first group and 11 prominent people in the next group. They made several suggestions. The main point of all is to select an election commission so that everyone is trusted and they can take steps for a good election. Their suggestions have been noted. The search committee will sit in a meeting after 4:00 pm tomorrow and review their suggestions and fix the working method.”

The cabinet secretary said 136 names were received from different political parties, 40 from professionals, 34 from individuals and 99 from various e-mails. These names will be reviewed when the search committee sits down again. One name may appear four or five times. Analyzing them will reveal the actual number.

Asked whether the names would be released, the cabinet secretary said the committee would decide on the matter.

Asked whether the BNP would be called as per the proposal of Jafrullah Chowdhury, the founder of the public health center, he said it was one of his suggestions. More than one person has suggested this. It may be discussed in tomorrow’s meeting. Much will be clear after tomorrow’s meeting.

Earlier, the first meeting of the search committee was held in the conference room of the Supreme Court after 11:30 pm.

After the meeting, eminent lawyer Dr. Shahdin Malik said, “I have asked the search committee to disclose the names submitted by the political parties as the Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners. If the names are revealed, it will be known whether the political parties really want fair elections or not.”

He said, “The search committee has listened to us attentively. They said, they will hear our words again from the record.”
