The process of closing unregistered news portals has been suspended

Post and Telecommunications Minister Mostafa Jabbar said the process of closing down unregistered news portals has been suspended for the time being. He confirmed the matter to the reporters on Tuesday evening (September 28).

Mostafa Jabbar said today was the last day to close unregistered news portals as per court order. However, the process of closing the news portals started with the BTRC listing where there are some errors. Therefore, the process of closing the unregistered news portal has been postponed for the time being.

“We have asked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for a list. Unregistered news portals will be closed based on their list,” he said. The minister said that a new time has been requested from the court for this.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) started the process of shutting down unregistered news portals since noon. At that time several news portals were seen closed.

Meanwhile, on September 14, the High Court ordered the closure of all unregistered online news portals in the country. The chairman of the BTRC and the chairman of the press council were asked to implement the directive within the next seven days.

On May 5, legal notices were sent to the relevant media asking them to formulate an “ethical policy” for the publication of any news, including sensitive news.
