Supreme Court to hear Nipun’s plea against Zayed’s election on tomorrow

The Appellate Division today set Wednesday to hear an appeal that challenged the High Court’s stay on declaration of film actress Nasrin Akhter Nipun as general secretary of Bangladesh Film Artistes’ Association.

Chamber judge Obaidul Hassan set the schedule after Nipun’s lawyer Rokanuddin Mahmud prayed for a hearing in this regard on Tuesday.

Nipun filed the appeal on Tuesday, the day after the High Court stayed the Election Appeal Board’s decision on February 5 declared Nipun as the general secretary of the organisation unopposed, disqualifying actor Zayed Khan as a candidate.

The HC had also asked the election appeal board headed by film director Sohanur Rahman Sohan to explain within seven days the legality of its decision disqualifying Zayed’s candidature on the ground of misconduct during the casting of the vote on January 28.

An online bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman granted the stay after hearing a writ petition filed by Zayed on Sunday.

Earlier, actor Zayed Khan was re-elected as the general secretary in the 17th edition of the Association elections held on January 28. But his contester Nipun brought allegation of corruption against Zayed in the election. She also submitted a complaint to the Social Welfare Ministry in written. Later, the ministry gave responsibility to the Appeal Board to resolve the matter.

On Saturday, The Appeal Board called a meeting with both sides. Though Nipun joined the meeting, Zayed Khan escaped it. In absence of Zayed Khan, Appeal Boad Board Chairman Director Sohanaur Rahman Sohan cancelled his candidacy and announced Nipun as uncontested general secretary.

High Court stayed the Election Appeal Board’s decision on February 5 declared Nipun as the general secretary of the organisation unopposed, disqualifying actor Zayed Khan as a candidate.
