Cricketer Nasir, Tamima indicted in marriage fraud case

A court in Dhaka on Wednesday  framed charges against former national cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife and Saudi Arabian Airlines cabin crew Tamima Sultana Tammi in a case filed over ‘illegal marriage’.

Meanwhile, Tamima’s mother Sumi Akhter has been acquitted from the case charge.

Dhaka’s Additional Magistrate Tofazzel Hossain passed the order today.

The court set March 10 to start recording depositions of the witnesses.

Tamima’s first husband Rakib Hasan filed the case on February 24, 2021, and the court had instructed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to probe the allegations and submit its report.

On September 30, the court issued a summon against the three. The same day, the case investigation officer Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a report terming the couple’s marriage “illegal”.

Tamima did not divorce her first husband Rakib. Rakib did not get any legal notice on the issue. Moreover, instead, Tamima made a fake divorce notice and published it in different media outlets.

She is still Rakib’s wife, and marrying anyone without divorcing her current husband is illegal and it is a punishable offenSe, the report said.

As per Muslim law, it is a crime and punishable to marry someone before divorcing the first husband.

In such a situation, cricketer Nasir Hossain and Tamima Sultana Tammi’s marriage was illegal, the report concluded.

Rakib and Tamima got married on February 26, 2011, and they have an eight-year-old daughter. On February 14, 2021, Tamima married Nasir without divorcing Rakib.
