Tarique Rahman Child Freedom Fighter: Mirza Fakhrul

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has termed Tarique Rahman, a convicted fugitive in multiple cases and a fugitive BNP acting chairman in the UK, as a child freedom fighter.

He made the remarks at a discussion at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity on Saturday (December 11) on “Demand for the release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her treatment abroad and the role of Ziaur Rahman in the war of independence”.

He said, “Begum Khaleda Zia is a freedom fighter. She was captured by Pakistani forces. Our acting chairman Tarique Rahman is another freedom fighter, he is a child freedom fighter. He was also in jail with his mother at that time. ‘

Mirza Fakhrul said, “The party is being organized under the leadership of Tarique Rahman. Every day, every moment hundreds of Ziaur Rahman are being made.”

Tarique Rahman, who is currently in the UK, has been convicted in four cases.

On July 21, 2016, the High Court quashed the acquittal of the trial court and sentenced Tarique Rahman to seven years in prison. Besides, he was fined Tk 20 crore.

Two years later, on February 8, 2018, Tarique was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. His mother Begum Khaleda Zia has also been convicted in this case. The court sentenced him to five years in prison, but the high court doubled his sentence. After serving more than two years, Begum Zia was temporarily released in March at the behest of the Prime Minister.

The third sentence came against Tarique in the grenade attack case on August 21. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on October 10, 2018.

Tareq Rahman, who was arrested in a corruption case in 2007 during the military-backed caretaker government, was released on parole the following year. He went UK and did not return home even though his bail expired.

When Khaleda Zia was convicted in February 2018, the BNP made Tarique the acting chairman.
