BSF firing kills 17-year-old in Dinajpur

A 17-year-old Bangladeshi boy was shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along Dainur border in Dinajpur Sadar upazila on Wednesday, a few hours after the authorities of Bangladesh-India vowed to bring the number of deaths on border to zero.

The deceased is–Minhajul Islam, son of   Jahangir Hossain of Khanpur (Bhitarpara) village in Dinajpur Sadar upazila and a class nine student of Khanpur High School.

Abu Bakar Siddique, chairman of Khanpur Union, confirmed the death.

The incident took place around 10pm on Wednesday.

The chairman said the BSF personnel opened fire when Minhajul and 8/10 others went near the border of main pillar number 315 of Dainur border.

Minhajul was shot and died on the spot, the chairman added.

The BSF later took his body inside the Indian territory. They are yet to hand over the body.

Naik Subedar Akhter Hossain of Dainur BPO under Fulabari BGB Battalion-29 said, “We have sent a letter to the BSF in this regard.  The BSF replied to the letter.  Preparations are underway for a flag meeting.”

Minhajul’s body is now left in Teliapara area of South Dinajpur, India.

Following a meeting between Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, a joint statement was issued on Wednesday.

It claimed the number of killings along the border has decreased significantly — that has made two top leaders satisfied.

Besides, both have agreed to bring the number of border killings down to zero.
