Hillary Clinton stopped Padma Bridge financing through ordering World Bank: Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday, September 01 said, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stopped financing the construction of Padma Bridge through ordering the then World Bank president.

While addressing a student rally in Dhaka on Friday, Sheikh Hasina alleged that the World Bank stayed away from financing the Padma Bridge putting false blame on the government.

Prime Minister further said, “It was just done for the post of managing director of a bank though it was a public bank. Law clearly states that a person can’t stay at the managing director’s post if he turns 60 years of age. In spite of it, he will have to stay in that post for another 10 years. There were pressures on us from a big country. They threatened to stop financing the Padma Bridge construction if that was not allowed to continue as the managing director. That individual filed a case against the government but got defeated in court. Then he persuaded his foreign friend to ask the World Bank to stop funding the Padma Bridge though no such decision was taken at the World Bank’s board. Hillary Clinton had stopped financing the construction of Padma Bridge through the then World Bank president. Then we pledged that we will build the Padma Bridge spending our own money, instead of seeking support from anyone else. We’ve done it. We’ve shown the entire world by doing that.”

Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling party organized the Rally at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan marking the National Mourning Day and 48th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Sheikh Hasina, throughout her address, came down heavily on the main opposition BNP and mentioned that they (BNP) are now talking about revival of democracy in the country despite the fact that they never believe in democracy as the BNP was formed by military dictator Ziaur Rahman who grabbed state power illegally violating the country’s constitution.

Sheikh Hasina said, “BNP was born at the hands of a person who illegally grabbed state power. They don’t believe in democracy. They are now saying that they will revive democracy in Bangladesh.”
