Renowned singer Begum Hasina Momtaz passes away

Begum Hasina Momtaz, a renowned singer breathed her last on February 18, 2024 at a hospital in the capital.  She suffered a cardiac failure around 6:00 PM. She was 79.

 Begum Hasina Momtaz was a student at the Department of Geography, University of Dhaka, and gained prominence as a cultural activist and singer since the 1970s. She is remembered for many of her songs, including  “tondra hara noyon amar..”  

She also inspired the nation during the mass movement of the 1969 and the liberation war in 1971 by her songs. Bangladesh Shilpokola Academy recognized her significant accomplishments as a singer by awarding her “ Shilpokola Award” in 2019.

 Her husband Late Mr. Rafiqul Islam was a renowned banker and served as the managing director of National Bank ltd. The deceased left her only son, many relatives and well-wishers. Her son is Professor Shibli Rubayat-Ul-Islam, former Dean, Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka. Now he serves as the chairman of Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission.  

Her Namaz e Janaza will be held on Monday February 19, 2024 at Eidgah Mosque at Dhanmondi 6/A after Zuhr prayers. The bereaved family requests all to pray for the salvation of her departed soul.
