Rohingya youth killed, others injured as shells from Myanmar blast

An 18-year-old Rohingya youth was killed and at least four others were injured after shells from Myanmar struck a Rohingya camp at the border’s zero line in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban on Friday.

The incident took place around 8:30pm at No Man’s Land in Konarpara on the Tumbru border of Ghumdhum union in the upazila.

Ashoke Kumar Pal, additional superintendent of police in Bandarban, said mortar shells went off at No Man’s Land in Konarpara on the Tumbru border of Ghumdhum union in the upazila, leaving one Rohingya youth Iqbal Hossain Bari dead and four others injured.

Iqbal succumbed to his injuries upon his arrival at the hospital, he added.

According to locals, five mortar shells from Myanmar were fired into the territory of Bangladesh. Of them, three exploded.

Din Mohammad, a community leader at Konapara Rohingya camp, said: “A shell fell in the camp and exploded. One person was killed and six others injured.”

Two other shells fell very close to the camp, according to him.

“Another shell crossed the border and fell into Bangladesh, but I can’t pinpoint where it fell.”
