Dr Wazed was humble and inimitable personality: Hasan Mahmud

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today termed noted nuclear scientist Dr MA Wazed Miah as an example of humble, introvert and inimitable personality.

“I have some memories with him (Dr Wazed) as I had worked as a special assistant to Awami League (AL) President for several years. He was a recluse, humble and introverted personality. He could consider all as nearest ones,” he said.

Dr Hasan, also joint general secretary of the ruling AL, made the remarks while speaking at a doa and milad mahfil at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after johr prayers, marking the 13th death anniversary of Dr MA Wazed.

Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former lawmaker Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin, Dhaka City South AL President valiant freedom fighter Abu Ahmed Mannafi and General Secretary Humayun Kabir, Dhaka City North AL President Sheikh Bazlur Rahman and General Secretary SM Mannan Kachi joined the doa and milad mahfil, among others.

Paying rich tribute to the memory of Dr Wazed, the information minister said many people did not know that he was Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s eldest daughter’s husband.

Gaining name and fame with his own quality, Dr Hasan said, he was chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and a researcher and his books have been recognized as textbooks in India.

He said after the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib along with most of the family members on August 15, 1975, Dr Wazed took proper care of Bangabandhu’s eldest daughter Sheikh Hasina and youngest daughter Sheikh Rehana and gave courageous to them.

Recalling a memory, Dr Hasan said, “It might be 2005. One day, I was standing on the premises of Sudha Sadan. He (Wazed) was saying that his mood was good as he paid the last instalment of the loan for the house. I asked him, brother-in-law! Which house’s loan? Pointing a finger to the Sudha Sadan, he replied, this house”.

You know that his nickname was Sudha Miah, the AL joint general secretary said, adding that the house was named after his nickname.
If he would have told any AL leader, the loan would be paid much before, Dr Hasan said, adding that he never shared this with anyone and he himself paid the bank loan.

The information minister said following the mental tortures carried out on AL President Sheikh Hasina during the BNP’s era from 2001 to 2006 and later in the reign of the then caretaker government, Dr Wazed Miah felt sick and did not recover from his sickness.

“I pray for the eternal peace of his departed soul. We all pray for him (Wazed Miah) so that the most merciful Allah grants him Jannah,” he said.

Replying to a question over a remark of BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rezvi, Hasan said: “We want the welfare of the BNP but the party itself wants to commit suicide. The initiatives, taken by the BNP, are suicidal ones.” He said the advice that Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader gave the BNP to shun the path of suicide was the right one.

“Now it is the matter of the BNP whether they would follow this advice (of the AL general secretary) or not,” the AL joint general secretary said.

About the BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s demand that the BNP would not join the polls until the government resigns, Hasan said: “We want the BNP to join the elections, compete with us and assess its popularity. But the fear of elections grips the party…we hope the BNP will join the polls overcoming its fear.”
