Language veteran Mirza Mazharul dies

Ekushey Padak recipient and language veteran Dr Mirza Mazharul Islam died of old age complications on Sunday. He was 93.

Mirza Mazharul Islam, who was a member of RashtrabhashaSangram Parishad (National Language Action Committee) first formed at Dhaka Medical College on September 30 in 1947, actively participated in the Language Movement.

He, who was a doctor by profession, provided treatment to many language movement activists, who were injured during the attack on students by the police on February 21, 1952. He also joinedAmtala meeting which was held on Dhaka Medical College Hospital premises.

Professor Mazharul participated in the War of Independence and played significant role in providing treatment to the injured.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasins and State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of language veteran Professor Dr Mirza Mazharul.

In a condolence message, the state minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members.
