The person who kept the Holy Quran Sharif in the puja mandap in Comilla has been identified. His name is Iqbal Hossain (35). Father’s name is Nur Ahmed Alam. The house is in Sujanagar area of ​​Comilla city.

Comilla Superintendent of Police Farooq Ahmed said that Iqbal Hossain was identified after seeing CCTV footage. He told Prothom Alo on Wednesday evening that there had been “dramatic progress” in the investigation by multiple police agencies. Attempts are being made to arrest Iqbal Hossain.

The Holy Quran was seen in a temporary puja mandap organized by Darpan Sangha on the north bank of Nanuadighi in Comilla town on Wednesday morning, the eighth day of the autumn Durga Puja. A group of people then attacked the mandap, accusing it of insulting the Qur’an. Massive vandalism was carried out there.

Due to this incident, the police clashed with a group of people who were going to attack Hindus in Hajiganj of Chandpur that day. Four people were killed there. The next day, Hindu temples, mandap’s and shops in Noakhali’s Begumganj were attacked and vandalized. Two people were killed in the attack there. Later, Hindu settlements in Pirganj, Rangpur were attacked, vandalized, looted and houses set on fire. Various other places in the country have been attacked, including Hindu temples and mandapas.

According to Comilla police sources, several teams of Dhaka and Comilla police have launched an investigation in the last one week after the incident on Wednesday. CC camera footage was analyzed. After a long search, it has been confirmed about Iqbal Hossain.

Police say Iqbal Hossain is a vagabond. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

Comilla Superintendent of Police Farooq Ahmed said details would be released tomorrow.

Law enforcement has been searching for answers to four questions since the incident. First, who took the Holy Qur’an to the temporary shrine. Second, a person called 999 to inform the police. Third, the incident made the first live (promotion) on Facebook. Fourth, whether any organized force has worked behind the communal incitement and attacks. The answers to the second and third questions are known. Law enforcement is close to answering the first and fourth questions.

The incident started from a temporary puja mandap on the north bank of Nanua Dighi in Comilla town on the occasion of Durga Puja. The incident of desecration of the Holy Quran in this puja mandapa first sparked communal tensions in the city of Comilla. It spread to different parts of the country including Chaumuhani of Noakhali, Hajiganj of Chandpur, Feni and Pirganj of Rangpur. The temple-mandapa was attacked and vandalized, as well as the businesses of the Hindu community. Homes of the Hindu community were burnt in Pirganj.

On the morning of the day (October 13), worship was held in the temporary mandap on the banks of Nanua Dighi till 2 am the day before. According to police sources, a local youth named Ekram Hossain called 999 emergency services around 7 am on October 13 and informed that there was a Holy Quran Sharif in the puja mandapa. This means that the Holy Quran has been kept between 2 pm and 8 am on October 12.

So far, the police investigation says that the person who took the Holy Quran Sharif to the mandapa is around 35 years old. His home is in Nanua Dighi area of ​​Comilla city. Police are in contact with the family of the suspect. However, he has not been arrested yet.
