Chakaria OC removed after ‘celebrating birthday’ with fugitive suspect

Osman Gani, the chief of Chakaria Police Station in Cox’s Bazar, has been removed from his post after his photograph with an accused fugitive while celebrating birthday at the police station went viral.

The OC was withdrawn and attached to police lines through an officer order signed by the Cox’s Bazar police superintendent Md Hasanuzzaman, additional police superintendent (admin) Md Rafiqul Islam told .

The order mentioned that Chakaria OC Md Osman Gani celebrated his birthday at the police station on March 2 where a fugitive Arhan Mahmud alias Rubel and several others were present.

However, Chakaria OC Osman Gani handed over the charge to inspector (investigation) Jewel Islam immediately after the order, Chakaria police inspector (investigation) Jewel Islam told .

Arhan Mahmud alias Rubel was accused in a case filed with Chakaria police station on charge of attempt to murder a man. There was an arrest warrant against him, inspector Jewel Islam said, adding that they were trying to arrest him.

Osman Gani joined as Chakaria OC four months ago. Earlier, he worked as inspector (investigation) of EPZ police station and detective branch of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.

Inspector Osman Gani could not be reached for comment despite several attempts through his personal mobile number.
