FBI found Top Secret documents at Donald Trump’s Florida home

In a raid of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property last month, agents from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) seized 33 boxes of documents.

The list of seized materials has now been unsealed by a US court.

The search of Trump’s estate on 8 August found the following documents in his personal office:

  • 7 ‘Top Secret’ documents (out of 18 Top Secret documents retrieved in total)
  • 17 ‘Secret’ documents (out of 54 Secret documents retrieved in total)
  • 3 ‘Confidential’ documents
  • 43 empty folders labelled ‘Classified’
  • 28 empty folders labelled ‘Return to staff secretary/military aide’

According to US law, upon leaving office the president must transfer all his or her documents to the US National Archives.

The documents released by the court on Friday reveal many classified documents were “intermixed” with personal effects, such as photographs, clothing, and newspaper clippings.

The FBI and Department of Justice are investigating whether Trump improperly handled records after he left office in January 2021.

Trump and his lawyers claim that all documents in his possession had already been declassified by the president.

In total, authories retrieved around 1,500 documents from Mar-a-Lago.

In a separate development, lawyers for the former president are pressing for an outside legal expert to be allowed to review the seized documents. A decision on their request is expected on Thursday.
