Awami League nominates Pran Gopal Datta for Cumilla-7

The Awami League has nominated former vice chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical University (BSMMU) Dr Pran Gopal Datta to contest the by-election to the vacant Cumilla-7 parliamentary constituency.

Barrister Biplab Barua, office secretary of Awami League, confirmed the matter on Saturday.

The decision to give Dr Pran Gopal the nomination came from a joint meeting of AL’s Parliamentary Board (PB) and Local Government Representative Nomination Board at Ganabhaban this morning.

Party President and AL Parliamentary and Local Government Representative Nomination Board’s President Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting.

The Comilla 7 constituency fell vacant with the death of parliamentarian Prof Ali Ashraf. The by-election to the constituency is scheduled to take place on October 7.

Pran Gopal, a former VC of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, has also served as Hasina’s personal physician. He was awarded the Independence Award in 2012 for his contributions to medical services.

The 68-year-old ear, nose and throat specialist is the vice president of the Awami League’s Cumilla north district chapter.

As per the Election Commission (EC), the deadline for the submission of nominations is September 13, while the date for the scrutiny of nomination papers is September 14 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is September 19.
