Ex-Ducsu VP Nur, Reza Kibria come under ‘attack’ by BCL in Tangail

Gono Odhikar Parishad Convener Reza Kibria and member secretary Nurul Haque Nur among several others came under attack at noon on Wednesday while paying homage to the shrine of Maulana Bhasani at his 45th death anniversary at Santosh in Tangail.   

Shakil-uz-Zaman, the senior joint convener of the organisation, alleged that the Chhatra League leaders and activists attacked them.

He said, “More than 50 BCL activists attacked us with locally-made weapons and brick chips as soon as reached near the shrine at around 12pm.”

“Dr Kibria, Nur and other leaders and activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad were evacuated after the attack,” said Tangail Additional Superintendent of Police Sarwar Hossain, adding that the situation is now under control.

The leaders and activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad said that they would respond to the attack by holding a press conference.

Locals said a section of BCL leaders wielding sticks started assaulting the leaders and activists of Gono Parished while they were approaching towards the graveyard of Bhashani with procession led by Reza Kibria and Nurul Haque Nur at around 11:45am.

At one stage of attacking, Reza Kibria got injured with a pelted stone. Later, police took Kibria to a safe place while several leaders including Nurul Haque took shelter in a prison van to escape the attack.

Reza Kibria told  that the attack carried out by BCL was premeditated. Several including female activists were wounded in the attack aiming at Nurul Haque Nur. “Police tried to protect us but they didn’t do so for various reasons.”

Meanwhile, Denying the claim,  Nibir Paul, organizing secretary of Chhatra League’s Maulana Bhasani University of Science and Technology unit, said Dr Reza and VP Nur were chanting slogans against the government and the prime minister. “They attacked us for protesting.

“Four of our members were injured. I strongly condemn and protest this incident. Chhatra League is always a symbol of peace,” he added.
