BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir sent to jail

A court in Dhaka on Sunday night has directed police to send arrested BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to jail in a case filed with the city’s Ramna Police Station on charge of attack on chief justice’s residence in the capital.

Earlier, the Detective Branch of police produced the BNP Secretary General before the court after showing arrested at about 8:10pm.

Producing the BNP Secretary General, the investigation officer and DB police inspector Humayun Kabir Khan pleaded to the court to keep Mirza Fakhrul detained in jail until the investigation into the case against him was over.

However, the pro-BNP lawyers held a hearing pleading to the court to grant him bail. On the other hand, the state opposed granting him bail.

Following the hearings of both sides, metropolitan magistrate Shafi Uddin ordered to send Mirza Fakhrul to jail instead of granting him bail.

Mirza Fakhrul was shown arrested nine and a half hours after he was detained from his Gulshan residence in the capital on Sunday morning.

He was shown arrested in the case filed with Ramna Police Station in connection with the attack on the residence of chief justice at Kakrail in the capital and vandalise buses on Saturday afternoon. As many as 59 leaders and workers of BNP including the party’s standing committee member Mirza Abbas were made accused in the case.

Mirza Fakhrul was detained by the detective branch of police from his Gulshan residence on Sunday, October 29, 2023 morning. He was later taken to the DB headquarters at Minto Road.
