3-day national vegetable fair begins today

A three-day long 6th ‘National Vegetable Fair-2022’ will begin today on Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) premises at Farmgate here.

This year’s theme of the fair is ‘Cultivation of safe vegetable to ensure health and nutrition available for round the year’ (Nirapad Sabji Chash, Shastya Pusti Baro Mash), Agriculture Secretary Md Sayedul Islam told
journalists at a press briefing at the Secretariat here on Sunday.

Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdur Razzaque will inaugurate the fair around  3pm, which will continue till March 2, he said.

The fair will remain open from 10am to 8pm everyday where a total of 52  government and private institutions will take part in the fair.

Before the inaugural function of the three-day fair, a human chain will be formed from south plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) to KIB square.

Later, a seminar titled ‘Role of vegetables in nutrition safety and agricultural transformation’ will be held at KIB auditorium while Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdur Razzaque will address it as the chief guest.

Highlighting the amount of vegetable production in the recent years, Sayedul said the vegetable cultivation has increased by seven times in the last 12 years.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), currently, Bangladesh is the third in cultivating vegetables across the globe while China and India secured the first and second positions respectively, he
added.

Noting that 13.29 percent of the country’s total GDP comes from the agriculture sector, the official said currently 100 species of vegetables are being cultivated in the country.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, about 1.97 crore tonnes of vegetables was cultivated on 9.35 lakh hectares of land across the country in 2020-21 fiscal year while about 1.84 crore tones of vegetables was cultivated on 9 lakh hectors of land in 2019-20 fiscal.
