Arakan Army promises to repatriate Rohingyas to Myanmar

The Arakan Army has promised to bring back the Rohingyas sheltering in Bangladesh to Myanmar.

Khaing Thukhain, the spokesperson of the United League of Arakan, the political wing of the group, issued a video message in this regard on Tuesday. The video message was broadcasted on the website of the Arakan Army.

He said: “Fighting between the Myanmar Army and the Arakan Army has intensified in Paletua of Rakhine and China State. Hundreds of Myanmar army officers and personnel joined the pro-independence Arakan Army and the United League of Arakan.”

Residents of the Rohingya camp, who are familiar with the Burmese language, said that the video message demanded international recognition of the Arakan Army and the United League of Arakan.

Khaing Thukhain also expressed interest in formal discussions with the international community including Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue.

The Arakan militia in Myanmar regard themselves as the protectors of Rakhine state and are fighting for autonomy.

In the last three weeks, the Arakan Army (AA) have been fighting with Myanmar’s junta across the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. Bullets and several shells fired from inside the Myanmar border landed on Bangladesh territory. Several military aircraft also violated Bangladesh airspace multiple times.
