Ekushey Padak-winning poet Quazi Rosy passed away

Quazi Rosy, advisor of Bangladesh Writers’ Association, former MP, freedom fighter, poet and journalist has passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilahi Raziun).

Poet Rosie died at a private hospital in the capital on Saturday night. Her daughter Sumi Sikander confirmed the matter to the media on Sunday morning.

Quazi Rosy had been ill for several days. She was receiving treatment at home.  Quazi Rosy was admitted to Square Hospitals in Bangladesh capital Dhaka on January 30. She was shifted to the ICU and put on life support on January 31.

Quazi Rosy was born on January 1, 1949 in Satkhira. She obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Bengali literature from Dhaka University. Shee retired in 2007 as an officer in the Department of Information.

Quazi Rosy was elected as an independent candidate from Satkhira as a Member of Parliament for the reserved women’s seat in the 10th National Assembly. She was a member of the Standing Committee on Libraries of the National Assembly.

Quazi Rosy started her literary career writing poems in the ‘60s and carved her niche with her works, namely, Pathghat Manusher Naam, Nashta Joyar, Amar Piraner Kono Map Nei, Larai and others. Besides, her work on martyred poet Meherun Nesa titled Shahid Kabi Meherun Nesa received a huge response from readers. She has also to her credit a work on the poet Rabindranath Tagore tiled Rabindranath: Rasikatar Kabita.

Quazi Rosy received Bangla Academy Literary Award for her contribution to poetry in 2018. Besides, she received Ekushey Padak in 2021.
