The 193-member UNGA also overwhelmingly demanded aid access and civilian protection in Ukraine and criticized Russia for creating a “dire” humanitarian situation after Moscow invaded its neighbor one month ago.
On Wednesday, Ukraine put forward the new resolution, originally prepared by France and Mexico, at an emergency session of the General Assembly.
A competing text by South Africa, which never mentioned Russia by name, received only 50 votes for, 67 against and 36 abstentions, and was therefore not adopted.
On March 5, Dhaka said it had abstained from voting in its own interest.
Meanwhile, hours before Thursday’s UNGA vote, Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantytskiy said they highly appreciate Bangladesh’s “responsible and balanced” attitude towards the resolution as he referred to Dhaka’s role in the March 2 resolution.
“We express our gratitude to the Bangladeshi side for its neutral position taken despite the enormous external pressure during the said voting,” he said.
Also on Wednesday, Russia submitted a resolution to the UN Security Council on the “humanitarian situation” in Ukraine — but it was not adopted.
