Ukrainian military destroys Russian warship and two other navy vessels in occupied port of Berdyansk (Video)
The Ukrainian forces destroyed a Russian ship and two other Russian navy vessels in the captured Ukrainian port city of Berdyansk.
On Thursday, March 24, the Ukrainian military released footage indicating that its soldiers had attacked the cruiser known as the ‘Orsk.’
Berdyansk, a port city that connects annexed Crimea to the beleaguered port of Mariupol and has the potential to aid in the creation of a land bridge to mainland Russia, was taken four days after Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia has utilized the port as a base for bringing in military equipment.
The Russian army’s television station praised the Orsk’s arrival in Berdyansk last week as a “epic occasion” because it was the first Russian battleship to dock there.
The Ukrainian navy and social media users shared video showing explosions and a large ship on fire at the port about 07:00 (05:00GMT) on Thursday.
While the Orsk was apparently destroyed, the fire spread to other boats in the port, as well as a munitions storage and a fuel terminal. Two ships looked to be speeding out from the port in footage from the incident.
According to Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar, the military targeted a “huge target” capable of transporting 20 tanks, 45 armoured vehicles, and 400 troops.
Ukrainian officials asserted that the Orsk attack had additional symbolic significance, implying that it was involved in Russia’s first seizure of Crimea in 2014, citing medals presumably awarded to the ship’s commander and a crewman.
