Paid respect towards Khandaker Mushtaq: DUTA president’s speech expunged

Professor Md Rahmat Ullah, president of Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (Duta) and leader of the pro-Awami League blue panel, addressed a discussion organized by Dhaka University on Mujibnagar Day, expressing deep respect to Khandaker Mushtaq, one of the chief conspirators behind the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Prof Rahmat Ullah made the remarks while addressing a discussion marking Mujibnagar Day on Sunday afternoon at the TSC auditorium under the chairmanship of Prof Akhtaruzzaman.

Later, DU Vice Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman expunged the particular part of Rahmat Ullah’s speech where he “showed respect” to Mushtaque.

M Rahmat Ullah said in his written statement, “I pay my deep respects to the four national leaders of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s government and Foreign Minister Khandaker Mushtaq.”

However, after paying his respects, he also expressed his hatred and anger towards Khandaker Mushtaq.

Immediately after his statement, Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Muhammad Samad strongly protested and raised objections to this remark.

He said that Dhaka University does not accept deep respect for a person like Khandaker Mushtaq in Dhaka University. I am appealing to the university to immediately expunge this statement.

After the rally, Proctor Professor Golam Rabbani told , “I think it is a presumptuous crime to make such a statement against the murderer of Bangabandhu in the year of Mujib.” Dhaka University cannot accept such statements. The president of the association has given a written statement. I request you to take immediate action in this regard.

Prof Akhtaruzzaman told , “Probably Prof Rahmat Ullah inadvertently said this,” and added, “In the same speech, he (Rahmat Ullah) showed utmost abhorrence to Mushtaque. It is understood that it may have come out inadvertently.”

Contacted, Prof Rahmat Ullah said, “Mushtaque is a stigma for the nation.  He is the most hated person in the history of our country. There is not a single aspect to show respect to him. I mentioned his name only when I was discussing different departments of the Mujibnagar government. ”

“I have discussed all the issues including Bangabandhu’s declaration of independence on 25th March and Declaration of Independence on 10th April. Speaking of the Mujibnagar government, even if I say something like a slip of the tongue … I did not make history. Mushtaq is a hated person in the history of Bangladesh. I personally condemned him. I said that in my speech. But I do not understand why it is being exaggerated. ‘ He addaed

He further said, “I’m sorry if it’s regarded as respect. That all happened inadvertently.”

Khandaker Mushtaque Ahmed was the Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Mujibnagar government and was later made President following the assassination of Bangabandhu.
