Tangail saree was of us, is of us, will remain of us: Textiles minister
Tangail saree was of us, is of us and will remain of us, Textiles and Jute minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak has said. He made the remark while talking to newsmen at his secretariat office in the capital on Wednesday , Feb 14.
The Textiles minister said, “Talks have been going on over the last couple of days to get the patent (geographical indication) of on tangail sarees. India has also published GI journal and we have also done it. Two countries can’t claim the GI of a same product.”
Asked whether the government would take measures for appeal in this regard, he said, “When we found it online at night, we sat with the ministry and department of the ministry concerned in the first hours of the following day. The cultural affairs ministry of the West Bengal state of India published a journal, but removed it from its website in the evening of that day owing to our activities on the issue.”
Nanak also said: “I want to tell you a truth. We should have to move to get the patent earlier, but we couldn’t do so. Those who are responsible in the administration didn’t move to get it earlier.”
He said, “Now, we are taking the measures which we need to do [for the GI of Tangail sarees]. They’ve adopted a tactic. They’ve the trade mark–Tangail Saree of Bengal. Tangail saree was of us, is of us, and will remain of us. We’ll do what we need to do to establish that right from our ministry. “
Nanak said that his ministry held an urgent meeting with all concerned and given instructions in this regard.
