PM sincere about flourishing country’s media: Hasan Mahmud

Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud today said the incumbent government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is giving utmost importance on flourishing media in the country.

“After assuming power in 1996, the journey of private television started with the hands of Sheikh Hasina,” he told the Desh TV’s new logo unveiling ceremony and receptions to distinguished personalities at a city hotel here as the chief guest.

Hasan, also information and broadcasting minister, said there were only ten private channels in the country till 2009, he said, adding that the number of private channels has increased when AL-led government came to power again in 2009 and in continuation of that now about 40 private channels are being broadcast and some more private channels will be broadcast soon.

In 2009, there were 450 daily newspapers while now it stands at 1250, he said.

Currently, there are thousands of online portals available in the country while a few online portals were in 2009, he added.

Around 5,000 online portals have submitted their applications for registration at the ministry of information and broadcasting, the minister continued.

The massive growth of the media has come with the hands of the premier Sheikh Hasina as her government thinks that the development of media is closely related to the development of state and democratic and equality-based society, he said.

He underscored the need for following the right and authentic path of the media as it has the ability and power to change the mindset of the people towards different direction.

Referring to media as the fourth pillar of the state, he said it plays the role of mirror of a society and that’s why media is very important in building ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur.

Lauding the contribution of Desh TV, a Bengali-language satellite and cable television channel, to the society, he hoped that Desh TV will play a vital role in developing correct mindset of the people.

Desh TV will ensure the traditional Bengali culture in the country imbued with the spirit of War of Liberation, Hasan hoped.
