40,000 more homeless families are getting houses this month

This month, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over disaster-tolerant houses to 40,000 more homeless families.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr. Md. Enamur Rahman made the remarks at a function organized at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Thursday (March 10) on the occasion of National Disaster Preparedness Day.

He said, “The Prime Minister announced in Mujib’s year that no one will be landless or homeless in this country, everyone will have an address. That is why the present government is implementing disaster resilient housing programmes to protect poor homeless people from disasters. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has constructed and handed over 11,604 disaster tolerant houses in FY 2018-19, 17,005 in FY 2019-20 and 66,291 in FY 2020-21.

Enamur Rahman said, “In the fiscal year 2021-22, work is underway to build 40,000 more disaster-tolerant houses at a cost of Rs 1,115 crore, which will be handed over by the Prime Minister at the end of this month. We have visited these houses in different places. We understand that houses have empowered people, increased their respect. The standard of living has further improved. It has provided security for women.”

The state minister said, “Bangladesh is facing various disasters due to its geographical location and climate change. Bangladesh ranks fifth among the 15 most disaster prone countries in the world. Every year we deal with various disasters including floods, landslides and lightning. Coronavirus has been associated with it since March 2020. Even during this epidemic, the government has listed about one crore and 25 lakh families and provided regular humanitarian assistance to them.”

Mentioning that many middle and upper class families have fallen below the poverty line due to the Corona crisis, the minister said, “As per the direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we had launched 333 helpline for such needy people. The helpline is still active. People who had sought food and help on this helpline, we delivered food to their doorsteps.”
