Chittagong Medical College closed indefinitely following BCL clash

Chittagong Medical College has been closed for an indefinite period following a clash between two groups of Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League.

Pribcipal of Chittagong Medical College  Sahena Akhter confirmed the matter to the media.

Male students have been ordered to leave halls by 5:00pm today while female students have been given 24 hours to leave their dormitories, our Chattogram staff correspondent reports quoting CMC Principal Prof Dr Shahena Akter.

“The campus has been declared closed indefinitely to avoid further untoward incidents,” she said.

“All the undergraduate examinations have been postponed while the postgraduate-level exams will continue,” she added.

Also, a five-member probe committee has been formed, headed by Professor Motiar Rahman of the surgery department, to investigate the incident.

“Three students of the medical college were injured in the clash,” said Pachlaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jahedul Kabir.

The injured, Mahfujul Haque, Naimul Islam, and Akib Hossain, are receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

According to CMC campus sources, two BCL activists who are said to be the followers of former mayor AJM Nasir Uddin were allegedly beaten by followers of Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury on Friday night at the medical dormitory.

Following the incident, a follower of Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury was beaten on campus around 9am on Saturday.

Chased by the followers of AJM Nasir Uddin, followers of the deputy education minister entered the room of the CMC principal. They were confined there till 1pm. Later, the police freed them.

Additional police have been deployed on campus since then.
