Movement for non-compliant foreign channels is unreasonable – Information Minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud  thinks that it is unreasonable to talk about the movement for the channels which are not showing the law of the country.

He told reporters at his office in the Secretariat on Sunday (October 3) at noon.

Regarding the threatened of Coab the minister said, it was unreasonable to talk about such a movement. It is against the interests of the country and against the law to advocate for the channels which are showing the thumbs up to the laws of the country and turning a blind eye to the culture. I hope you do not engage in activities against the interests of the country. The government will not bow to any pressure. The government is determined to uphold the interests of the country and implement the law.

Asked about talks with the cable operator, he said there could be talks if they wanted to talk. They can be our collaborators, negotiators. However, the basis of the discussion will be obedience to the law, protection of the interests of the country. Although the cable operators say that they are facing financial loss, it is a statement to deceive the people. Did they reduce the charges after the channels were not seen? Not a single money has been lost. The fee that the agents used to pay for showing foreign channels will not have to be paid now, it will save money.

He added that 16 TVs including BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, France TV, Russian TV, Euro TV, Animal Planet come to Cleanfeed in Bangladesh. Not everyone stopped them. Some people including Akash, DTH have continue these channels. At first they talked about some difficulties. I hope it will be resolved in a day or two. If anyone breaks the condition, he will be charged with breach of condition.

Dr. Hasan said, “When we have taken this step today With the interests of the country being jeopardized, the law of the country is being thumbed down, the interests of the domestic media are being jeopardized, all the media in the country have congratulated it, those associated with the media, they have congratulated, the artists have congratulated”.

We have taken this decision in the interest of the country, in the interest of the people of the country, in the interest of the country’s media industry, journalists and the artists and artisans associated with the media. Those who point the finger at the law of the land and speak in the name of the interests concerned do not speak for the country.

He said the government lost hundreds of crores of rupees in revenue by not following the rules of broadcasting on foreign channels. Many are being cut from the media due to deprivation of this investment. When this investment is made by the local media, then the cuts from the media will stop or the cuts cannot be made on that pretext. Thus the whole country is being harmed. We have to protect the interests of our country. The mobile court campaign will continue. The Secretary will hold meetings with DCs and Divisional Commissioners.
