Rishi Sunak announced as UK’s new PM

Shortly after 15.00 GMT+1, the Tories announced UK’s new PM, the former finance minister, Rishi Sunak.

With the support of more than half of Tory PM’s, Sunak has been the definite favourite to replace Liz Truss, who recently resigned after the shortest term in UK’s history. He was elected Conservative leader on Monday and will become the next prime minister, after rival Penny Mordaunt failed to secure the necessary 100 nominations from her fellow MPs.

He will become Britain’s first British Asian prime minister, and will inherit a UK economy that was headed for recession even before the recent turmoil triggered by Liz Truss’ policies. “Rishi Sunak is therefore elected as leader of the Conservative Party,” senior backbencher Graham Brady said, as Mordaunt vowed her “full support” for the former finance minister.
