President and Prime Minister greeted the countrymen and Muslims across the world

Marking the anniversary of birth and demise of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), the country is observing the holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi today.

This holy day is commemorated in the third month of the Islamic calendar, Rabi’ al-awwal.

The day is a public holiday. Different government and non-government organisations, including the Islamic Foundation, have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ob Tuesday  issued separate messages on the eve of Eid-e-Miladunnabi and greeted the countrymen and Muslims across the world.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid said the holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi is a sacred and important day for the Muslims of the whole world. Allah had sent Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) to this world as “Rahmatullil Alamin,” a blessing for the entire universe, he added.

He (Muhammad) had emerged as “Sirajam Monira,” the enlightened light in the world, the head of the state said, adding: “He showed the path of light in the era of sinful acts, injustice, falsehood and darkness and established a society based-on truth, beauty and justice”.

Apart from establishing a society based on equality and justice, the prophet has given clear directives about women rights and dignity, dignity of labour and responsibility of employers, the president said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said Allah had sent Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) as ‘Rahmatullil Alamin’ for peace, emancipation, progress and overall welfare of the whole world.

The prophet had blown the wind of peace throughout the world by engaging him in establishing brotherhood, justice and equity-based society and ensuring welfare for mankind, she said.

Hasina expressed firm conviction that peace, justice and welfare would be ensured in the current turbulent world, including the coronavirus pandemic, through following the ideals, including lessons from his life, lifestyle and worship, of the prophet.

Marking the day, Islamic Foundation has chalked out a fortnight-long program from Wednesday.

State Minister for Religious Affairs Md Faridul Haque Khan is expected to inaugurate the 15-day program at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the city on Wednesday.

The programs include religious sermons, doa mahfi and milad, seminars, exhibition of Islamic calligraphy and posters based on the life of the prophet, Islamic cultural competitions, and recitation of the holy Quran and poems on him.

The 15-day long Islamic book fair is expected to be organized on the national mosque premises from Wednesday to mark the birth and demise anniversary of the last and final Prophet Hazrat Muhammad.

Some 50 Islamic Missions and seven Imam Training Academies have also chalked out various programmes marking the day.

Besides, Qurankhani, doa mahfil and special prayers would be organized at the Mausoleum of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tungipara in Gopalganj district, marking the day.

Marking the day, Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar are expected to broadcast special programs and different national dailies would publish supplementary highlighting the importance of the day.

It is said that Muzaffar al-Din Gökböri was the first Muslim ruler to formally celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. In 1588, known as Mevlid Kandil, the Ottomans then declared it as an official holiday.

This day is now celebrated in almost all Islamic countries, with the exception of those with a strong Muslim population, including Ethiopia, India, Turkey, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, France, Italy, Jordan and the Maldives. It is not an official public holiday and is prohibited only in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
