Stern action to be taken for sabotage acts: Information Minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said the government would take stern action if BNP try to create any anarchic situation in the country in the name of movement, considering the safety and security of commoners.

“Along with the people, Awami League will also give harsh reply if BNP try to create any anarchic situation in the name of movement,” he told reporters after a function of distribution clothes among the transgender and iftar mahfil.

Bangladesh Hizra Kallayn Foundation, an organization of transgender, organized the function at its office in city’s Bangabandhu Avenue.

Hasan said they (BNP) are issuing such threats of movement in the last 13 and a half year. Everyone has the right to do movement in a democratic country, he said, adding, Awami League, along with the countrymen, would give reply if anyone try to burn people through arson attacks, vandalize vehicles and create anarchic situation in the name of movement.

The government would also take tougher actions against them, considering the security of the people, said Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary.

In the function, the minister said once there was no identity of the transgender and they were neglected in the society. None, but it is Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has recognized the transgender people at first in 2013, he added.

He said their job opportunities have been ensured according to the structure everywhere including in the government service. The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fulfilled the living will all through giving houses under the Ashrayan Project, he added.

The minister said Ziaur Rahman, Ershad and BNP under the leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia were in power at different times after 1975. But they did nothing for the transgender people, he added.

Later, Hasan distributed clothes among the transgender people.

Foundation president Abida Sultana Mitu presided over the meeting.

Earlier, the minister addressed the 161st meeting of the Press Institute of Bangladesh’s (PIB) Board of Directors at the meeting room of his ministry at Secretariat here.

Additional secretary of the ministry Md Faruk Ahmed, additional secretary of Finance Ministry Rehana Parvin, Principal Information Officer Md Shahenur Mia, Dhaka University Mass Communication and Journalism Department Professor Dr Abul Mansur Ahmed, senior journalist Mustafiz Shafi, Editor-in-Chief of DBC News M Manjurul Islam,

President of National Press Club Farida Yasmin, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists vice president Madhusudan Mandal and joint secretary general Sheikh Mamunur Rashid, the daily Desh Bartaman editor Nasiruddin Chowdhury and member secretary of the board and PIB director general Zafar Wazed took part in the meeting with board chairman and editor of the daily Sun Enamul Haque Chowdhury in the chair.

The meeting approved the minutes of the 160th meeting of the Board and discussed about increasing honorarium of the board members and different activities of various sub-committees.
