IEB 74th founding anniversary, Engineers’ Day today

The 74th founding anniversary of the Engineers Institution, Bangladesh (IEB) and the Engineers’ Day will be observed in the country today.

On the occasion, President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued seperate messages greeting the engineers.

In his message, President Md Abdul Hamid said enginners have scopes to contribute to the implementation of the mega plans announced by the government.

“The government has announced ‘Vision 2021′ to turn Bangladesh into a developed and prosperous country. The Delta Plan 2100 has been formulated,” he said.

The President said many mega projects – Padma Bridge, metrorail, Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Payra deep seaport and Karnaphuli tunnel – are being implemented.

As the skilled human resources, the enginners have scopes to contribute to implementation of these mega plans, he said.

Greeting all the engineers on the occasion, Abdul Hamid said the country’s people expect that the engineers would contribute to the country’s sustainable development applying their knowledge and skill.

Recalling the contribution of enginners in national development, he said the role of enginners is significant in the country’s technological and infrastructural development.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, urged engineers to play more effective role in constructing infrastructures suitable to cope with adverse impacts of climate change.

“Engineers must play more effective role in building infrastructures tolerant to climate change and its adverse impacts, and ensuring food and energy security,” she said.

The prime minister said the role of engineers is very important in the country’s overall development.

The technological and engineering development is the key in the development of a nation, she said, adding that immediate after the independence of the country, the engineers had played an significant role in reconstructing war- ravaged Bangladesh under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Sheikh Hasina said the engineers are putting the country forward through technical and engineering development.

In continuation of the Awami League government since 2009, she said, it has been implementing many mega projects to construct Padma Bridge, metrorail, elevated expressway, Karnaphuli tunnel, LNG tarminal, Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and 100 special zones apart from the development of road, rail and waterway communication.

The engineers are playing key role in these development projects, the prime minister said.

Recalling the government’s constant support for the engineers, she said the AL government always remains beside them.

During its 1996-2001era, the AL government allocated 10 bighas land for construction of IEB building, while it provided a total of Taka 46 crore for the IEB buliding, Sheikh Hasina said.

She said on the occasion of Mujib Year and the 50 years of the independence, Bangladesh graduated to a developing country from a least developed one, while the engineers had a significant contribution to this end.

Sheikh Hasina hoped that the enginners would play a leading role in building a prosperous and developed Sonar Bangla, dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, by 2041.

The President and the Prime Minister wished all the programmes taken on the occasion of Engineers’ Day a success.
