Shahabuddin Ahmed laid to rest

Former President and Chief Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed was laid to eternal rest in the city’s Banani graveyard
today.

Following a namaz-e-janaza at National Eidgah at around 10am, the body was taken to the graveyard.

Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, former Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hasan, judges of the Appellate division and High Court division of the Supreme Court, lawyers, leaders of different political parties, along with his admirers attended the janaza.

To show respect to Shahabuddin Ahmed, proceedings of both the divisions of the Supreme Court remained closed today, said a Supreme Court release here.

Earlier, his first namaz-e-janaza was held at his village in Kendua upazila of Netrokona district yesterday. Ahmed was given a guard of honor before the janaza prayer.

Ahmed passed away at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) here on Saturday at the age of 92.

Family sources said Ahmed breathed his last around 10:25am yesterday. He had been suffering from old age complications for a long time.

In February, he got admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of CMH as his physical condition deteriorated.

Ahmed was born on February 1, 1930. He served as the President of Bangladesh from 1996-2001, and the Chief Justice from 1990-1995.

Earlier, he took over the charge of acting President of the country in 1990 after Hussain Muhammad Ershad resigned from the post.
