Women get empowered under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership: Information Minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister and Joint General Secretary of Awami League (AL) Dr Hasan Mahmud today said women have been empowered in Bangladesh under the dynamic leadership of Sheikh Hasina.

“We believe that people’s empowerment is possible through women’s empowerment as half of the country’s population is women. If people are to be empowered, women need to be empowered. That is why, our great leader Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina believes in women’s empowerment,” he added.

Dr Hasan said these as chief guest at the annual conference of Rangunia Upazila Mahila AL this evening, held at Rangunia Municipality’s Advocate Nuruchchafa Talukder Auditorium.

Dr Hasan said that no previous government had worked so much for the women development as much the AL government has done.

“There are more leaders in Bangladesh. But they did nothing for women’s development. BNP and their leader Khaleda Zia have not done anything for the development of women. They have worked only for their own development,” Hasan added.

Upazila Mahila AL President Palashi Mutsuddi presided over the conference while AL Finance and Planning Secretary Wasika Ayesha Khan, MP, addressed the conference as the special guest.

Upazila Mohila AL General Secretary Nilufar Akhter conducted the function while President of Chattogram North District Mohila AL Dilwara Yusuf and its General Secretary Basanti Prabha Palit, among others, spoke in the function as guests.

Dr. Hasan Mahmud said that the women development in Bangladesh under the leadership of Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina has become an example before the world.

“Nobody could think 15-20 years ago that a woman would be a DC or SP in the country. But now many UNOs and DCs are women in Bangladesh and they are working with proper efficiency. The empowerment of women in Bangladesh is possible under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina,” Hasan said.

The information minister said, in fact, the empowerment of women had started in 1996 when Bangabandhu’s daughter took charge of the first government following the verdict of the people.

Sheikh Hasina appointed women as judges of the High Court and also appointed female judges in the Appellate Division. Now women secretaries in many ministries are performing their duties with efficiency,” Hasan said.

The minister said that women have been empowered not only in the government sector but also in private sector and in rural areas.

“One-third of the women members in the Upazila Parishad and Union Parishad have been confirmed by Sheikh Hasina.  Earlier, only the father’s name was written in the place of the guardian, but now writing the mother’s name is compulsory ” Hasan said.

Dr Hasan said Bangladeshi women never thought that anyone would get allowance after being abandoned by husband. The AL government introduced this allowance, he added.

Dr Hasan said that the stipend money goes to the mother on her mobile phone when her child goes to school.

Hasan remembered that the contribution of AL government regarding women development should be kept in mind even during the voting.

“The leaders of the AL women wing should play a responsible role in the villages so that the women of this country do not forget the boat symbol,” he added.

Upazila Chairman Swajan Kumar Talukder, Mayor Shahjahan Sikder, upazila AL leaders Zahir Ahmed Chowdhury, Nazrul Islam Talukder, Idris Azgar, Akther Hossain Khan, Shafiqul Islam,  Engineer Shamsul Alam Talukder,  Mohila AL leaders Syeda Rifat Akther Nishu and Advocate Rehena Akther, among others, attended the function.
