New CEC, ECs to be sworn in today

The newly appointed election commissioners headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal will take oath today, Sunday (February 27).

They will be sworn in at 4:30 pm at the Supreme Court’s Judge Lounge. According to the constitution, the Chief Justice will read out their oath.

The EC was constituted yesterday (Saturday, February 26) for the first time in accordance with the law. Retired Senior Secretary Kazi Habibul Awal has been appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).

A notification in this regard has been issued by the Cabinet Division.

The other four Election Commissioners (ECs) appointed are – Retired District and Sessions Judge Begum Rashida Sultana, Retired Brigadier General Ahsan Habib Khan, Retired Senior Secretary Md. Alamgir and Anisur Rahman.

The President made the appointment in a notification issued by the Cabinet Division. The notification also said that the appointment was made by the President as per the powers given in Article 118 (1) of the Constitution.
