Inauguration of Rokeya Sultana’s painting exhibition and monograph

An exhibition of Rokeya Sultana’s works of art has been opened to the public at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Center in Dhaka’s Gulshan to commemorate 50 years of Bangladesh-India friendship. It was unveiled on Wednesday (October 8th) in the presence of eminent historian, author and President of the 1971 Genocide-Torture Archive and Museum, Professor Muntasir Mamun and Indian High Commissioner Vikram Kumar Doraiswamy.

A press release issued by the Indian High Commission on Wednesday night said that the distinguished guests also unveiled a monograph on the works of artist Rokeya Sultana, recently published by the Bengal Foundation.

The event marked the beginning of the first independent exhibition of Rokeya Sultana’s artwork in India. Which will start on October 23 at the Lalit Kala Academy in New Delhi. The exhibition, organized entirely by the ICCR, will also be held in Kolkata next December.

Decorated by the Bengal Foundation, the exhibition depicts the fascinating journey of an artist studying in Santiniketan. She trained in Santiniketan under the supervision of Somnath Hore, Sanath Kar and Lalu Prasad Shaw and expanded her artistic career in Bangladesh. Among her advisers in the country are Safiuddin Ahmed and Mohammad Kibria.

Rokeya Sultana is an award-winning Bangladeshi printmaker and painter. Her recognition includes the Ninth Asian Biennale; National Art Exhibition, Dhaka; She also received a residential scholarship at the L’Atelier Lacouriere et Frelaut in Biennale, India and Paris, the third India building. She obtained her master’s degree in fine arts from Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan in 1983 on an ICCR scholarship.
