BNP is main barrier to democracy, progress: Obaidul Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said the BNP is the main impediment to democracy and progress in the politics of Bangladesh.

He made the remark while talking to reporters after paying homage to Shaheed Sheikh Jamal on the occasion of his (Jamal’s) 69th birthday.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, placed separate wreaths on the grave of Sheikh Jamal at the city’s Banani graveyard on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League.

AL presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, organising secretaries Ahmed Hossain, Advocate Afzal Hossain and SM Kamal, publicity and publication secretary Dr Abdus Sebhan Golap and science and technology affairs secretary Abdus Sabur were, among others, present on the occasion.

He said betrayal is mixed with the blood of BNP as its founder Ziaur Rahman was involved in the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members in 1975.

Later, the AL general secretary said, Zia’s working relations with them in the subsequent politics of the country had become the biggest obstacle in the way of institutionalising democracy in the country.

Calling upon all the pro-liberation forces to get united under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said: “All must be united to stop the politics of killing and conspiracy from the soil of Bengal forever”.

Responding to a statement of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, he said Fakhrul frequently say that Awami League is destroying the country and its economy.

“Only words of destruction are found in his words. He (Fakhrul) only knows destruction because (BNP) had destroyed everything to stay in power. To this end, they do not find the country’s development with their eyes now. In fact, the BNP is destroying itself through its negative politics,” Quader said.

About the BNP’s demand of formation of a national government, he said the BNP was in a hotchpotch position last time while demanding a national government during the general elections and the party will do the same this time too.

The BNP leaders get isolated from the people due to their engagement in the politics of conspiracy, the AL general secretary said.
