Awami League expels Gazipur Mayor Jahangir Alam

The Awami League has expelled its Gazipur city unit general secretary and Gazipur City Corporation mayor Jahangir Alam from his position in the party for his derogatory remarks on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The decision was taken on Friday at a meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee at Ganabhaban with AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Jahangir’s primary membership of Awami League has also been suspended while directives have been given to take legal action against him.

On October 3 last, he was served a show-cause notice for violating organizational discipline and acting against the interests of the party.

On September 22, a video of Mayor Jahangir making some derogatory comments on Bangabandhu and the martyred freedom fighters at a program went viral on social media.

Tension within the party became obvious on September 24, when the mayor’s supporters as well as his opponents demonstrated by blocking the highway near Board Bazar.

Since then, party supporters of the rival groups have been staging protests and counter-protest in the city.

After the news of his expulsion spread, leaders and activists of his rival group brought out processions and set fireworks in the town celebrating the party chief’s decision.

They distributed sweets among the activists at the Tongi office of the party.

Senior leaders of the Awami League, Shechchhasebak League and Chhatra League also attended a brief rally held at the office.
