Iran’s riot police clashes with students at Sharif University

Iranian security forces clashed with students at a prominent university in Tehran on Sunday, the latest in a series of deadly clampdowns on nationwide protests that were ignited by the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.

Activist Twitter account 1500tasvir, posted several videos showing Sharif University, surrounded by dozens of riot police, to their 168,000 followers.

One of the videos showed security forces firing teargas towards students and the sound of what appeared to be shooting at a distance could be heard.

Another video showed security forces chasing dozens of students trapped in the university’s underground parking. The account said dozens of students had been arrested.

The anti-government protests, which began at 22-year-old Mahsa Amini’s funeral on September 17 in the Kurdish town of Saqez, have spiralled into the biggest show of opposition to Iran’s authorities in years, with many calling for the end of more than four decades of Islamic clerical rule.

Protests resumed on Sunday after the busiest day of demonstrations both in Iran and abroad on Saturday. Thousands of people marched in Paris on Sunday to condemn Iran’s Islamic leadership in a giant show of solidarity with the protests in Iran.

At least 92 people have been killed as Iran has cracked down on women-led protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini after her arrest by the notorious morality police, the group Iran Human Rights said Sunday.

As protests stretch into a third week, President Ebrahim Raisi on Sunday said that the “enemies” of Iran had “failed in their conspiracy”.

IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam urged the international community to take urgent steps against the Islamic republic to stop the killing of Iranian protesters, saying they amount to “crimes against humanity”.
